Mayor Williams – I told you so …?

March 10th, 2010

As Super City debate on CCOs and all things Super heats up – the absence of criticism  of Mayor Andrew Williams continuous “Wolf” cries last year – is conspicuous.

It increasingly appears that the Mayor was dead right with emphasis on the “dead” for local body politicians to have a significant input into local matters.

By their nature, CCOs are designed to take control away from politicians and the public to get things done.

He’s also full of admiration for Takapuna resident Shaun Quincey who’s currently rowing the Tasman from Coffs Harbour to a likely landing spot around Taranaki.

Auckland councils are currently making a last ditch effort to limit the power new unelected agencies will wield in the super city.

The councils are finalizing their submissions to the Auckland governance select committee before Friday’s deadline. Many fear that the elected super city council will lose control of some of the most important aspects of local government.

This is the council’s last chance to persuade MPs before the Super City blue print is locked into law.

“Take or leave it” offer “derisory” – Mayor Williams “dead right.”

Herald commentator Brian Rudman has come out in heavy support of Mayor Andrew William’s stance on the leaky home scandal.

Mr Rudman said Mr Williams reaction to the Government 10%  “take or leave it” offer “derisory” – and he’s dead right.

“Mayor Williams says the [Mayoral Forum] talks broke down after he said the miserly 10 per cent of repair costs the Government was offering to contribute  – was less than the 12.5 per cent it would get back in goods and services tax.”

Pricey ticket to Auckland Mayoralty

North Shore Mayor, Andrew Williams, says raising the amount super-city mayoral candidates can spend on campaigning will create elitism in the race, he told Morning Report this morning

Under proposed legislation, those seeking the job would be allowed to spend up to $580,000 during the official three-month campaign period.

The current cap is $70,000.

Mr Williams, who has yet to declare whether he will contest the job, says it’s a staggering increase and will price some contenders out of the mayoralty contest.

Only the rich or those with the support and funding of political parties will be able to stand, he says.

NSCC

Controversy over recent claims by Local Government Minister  Rodney Hide that his reforms simply sail through Cabinet virtually unchallenged has turned the spotlight on the up-coming third Auckland Council bill, North Shore Mayor Andrew Williams said today.

“Since the spectacle of Rodney Hide’s extraordinary claim that his papers to Cabinet sail through because his fellow ministers “are too busy with their own stuff they’re not bothered” and his subsequent retraction and apology, dozens of North Shore residents have told me they will be taking a close interest in the next Auckland Council bill to see if the Minister has slipped anything through under the radar,” Mayor Williams said.
