While Orewa police continue in their hunt for the driver who struck and killed local GP Graham Robinson last week, it has emerged that the vehicle cut in on the cyclist and then veered away.

Scene studies by Orewa police show the vehicle passed Dr Robinson’s riding companion prior to swerving into Dr Robinson, the NZ Herald reports.

Detective Mark Palma of Orewa police said the second cyclist, riding about 25 metres behind, yelled a warning that a vehicle was coming, prompting Dr Robinson to move further to the left. Dr Robinson suffered fatal injuries in the incident on Peake Rd near Helensville, northwest of Auckland.

Detective Palma said police did not know if the move had been deliberate.

The old bridge spanning the Oteha Stream - footpath being replaced

The old bridge spanning the Oteha Stream - footpath being replaced

A new bridge, costing $2 million, is currently being constructed in Albany, for the shared use of pedestrians and cyclists.

The location of this bridge is along the Oteha Stream off the Old Albany Highway. This initiative comes as a move to promote children to walk or cycle to school.

The $2 million cost is being shared between the North Shore City Council, the Ministry of Education, and the New Zealand Transport Agency.

Alongside this improvement, rubbish bins are being installed and native trees are being planted.

The path of the current bridge (pictured) is quite narrow,  and this initiative is to promote cycling and walking.

Cycle lanes (update no.2)

October 6th, 2009

By John Grant

You will see in the current North Shore Times addition a story promoting why the cycle lanes should be kept open.

It’s a continuation of a one sided theme. This station is neither for or against cycle lanes but is strongly opposed to one sided arguments.
